Detail information about job Stipendiary Junior Research Fellow in Tibetan and Himalayan Studies. Terms and conditions vacancy

Wolfson College, a postgraduate college of the University of Oxford, proposes to appoint one stipendiary Junior Research Fellow in Tibetan and Himalayan Studies. Over the past few decades, Tibetan Studies has developed rapidly from a discipline mainly devoted to classical Buddhist literature into a highly diversified field, covering a period from pre-history to the 21st century and comprising various methods and approaches such as textual studies, linguistics, anthropology, archaeology, art history, study of religions, and philosophy. The Junior Research Fellowship is meant to reflect this diversity. Wolfson College seeks to appoint an outstanding scholar with a broad background in the history, literature, religious traditions, and culture of Tibet and the Himalayas, preferably combining several of the aspects mentioned above in their work. The person elected will pursue research in this field and make the results available to the public. We are looking for a person who can demonstrate the ability for original research and enjoys engaging with students and colleagues. Oxford offers a unique research environment in Asian Studies in general, and Tibetan and Himalayan Studies in particular, including several Faculties and Colleges, libraries and museums. For further information, see www.wolfson.ox.ac.uk/clusters/tibetan-himalayan.

Main tasks of the post:

  • To undertake research and publish on Tibetan and Himalayan cultures
  • To help coordinating the activities of the Tibetan and Himalayan Research Centre at Wolfson
  • To support Tibetan and Himalayan Studies in the Faculty of Oriental Studies
  • To participate actively in the academic life of the College
  • To act as College Advisor to a number of Wolfson students.

Qualifications and experience required:

  • Postgraduate experience in Tibetan and Himalayan Studies or a related field
  • To hold a doctorate in a relevant field by commencement of the Fellowship
  • Excellent language skills in literary and/or spoken Tibetan

The duration of the Fellowship will be from 1 January 2018 until 31 August 2020.  The person elected will be based in Oxford and will carry out research and publish in the above field.

The annual stipend will be £32,000, plus any general percentage increase in salaries, agreed by the Remuneration Committee, that may come into effect. These Fellowships carry Common Table rights (currently up to £43 a week for own meals in Hall). Fellows are entitled to apply for College accommodation at the College rates.  The Fellow is permitted to undertake up to six hours' teaching per week.

The full job description and selection criteria should be consulted before submitting an application.
