This is an exciting opportunity for a talented researcher to join a multidisciplinary research team working on an MRC-funded study investigating the aetiology of self-harm behaviours: “Pathways to self-harm: Biological mechanisms and genetic contribution” (Principal Investigator Dr Becky Mars). This research has the potential to inform new strategies for risk detection, prevention and treatment of self-harm.
The research will investigate a) the role of inflammation and puberty as potential mediators of the impact of early life adversity on risk of self-harm and b) the genetic overlap between suicidal and non-suicidal self-harm. You will use a range of statistical approaches including mediation analysis and genetic epidemiology methods. You will also use a newly emerging method-two-sample Mendelian randomisation- to evaluate the causal influence of the proposed mediators on self-harm.
You will be based within the Centre for Academic Mental Health in the Department of Population Health, Bristol Medical School, but will work closely with colleagues in the MRC Integrative Epidemiology Unit (IEU) as well as with external collaborators. The work will utilise large-scale available datasets as well as in-house data, such as the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC, www.bris.ac.uk/alspac) cohort, and from initiatives such as the UK Biobank.
The role provides an excellent opportunity to develop further skills in epidemiological research in a cross-disciplinary environment. Opportunities for continued training and career development are available, including the short courses run by the Department of Population Health, Bristol Medical School and the University of Bristol staff development programme.
You will have a PhD (or equivalent experience) in genetics, epidemiology, psychology or statistics and a track record of published research. You will have experience of advanced statistical methods, ideally mediation analysis, Mendelian randomisation analyses, and genetic epidemiology methods.
