Detail information about job Postdoctoral Research Associate in Scientific Archaeology. Terms and conditions vacancy

The Department of Archaeology at the University of York has been awarded funding from the Arts & Humanities Research Council for the project “Protohistoric to Medieval pastoralism in the Western Alps: The origins and development of long-distance transhumance”.

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral research associate to join the multi-disciplinary team combining Archaeology and Chemistry. You will work closely with the project Director, Dr Kevin Walsh, with Dr David Orton (York, Bioarchaeology) and Professor Alistair Pike (Archaeology, Southampton). You will be based in BioArCh and the main Department of Archaeology at the King’s Manor, York, an internationally renowned department for Archaeology and Bioarchaeology. You will be expected to undertake research for up to six weeks over the course of the project looking at animal bone assemblages and sampling in France, Italy and Switzerland, and to travel to Southampton to undertake the isotopic analyses.

The main purpose of the role is to conduct high quality research under the supervision of senior colleagues on a project that will study the development of long-distance pastoral transhumance (the management and movement of animals between lowland to high altitude pasture) in the Western Alps, from the Iron Age to the Medieval period. You will contribute to the production of research outputs and assist with the development of the research programme, including taking primary responsibility for the zooarchaeological and isotopic research detailed in the post profile.

You will have specialist knowledge and competency in the area of isotopic and/or zooarchaeology analyses and methods and have a PhD in archaeological science, archaeozoology, geochemistry, or equivalent experience. You should be knowledgeable and experienced in chemistry or geochemistry (strontium & oxygen isotope analyses) AND/OR zooarchaeology to engage in high quality research and be competent in isotopic AND/OR zooarchaeology methods. You should have proven skills in writing up research work for publication in high profile journals and experience of engaging in public dissemination. You should be willing to travel to various locations in the UK and abroad in order to collect or analyse samples. We are particularly interested in candidates with the ability to read/speak/write French and/or Italian. Competency in data analysis (statistics and/or GIS), experience of sampling bone/teeth for destructive analysis and a basic knowledge of European/Northern Mediterranean Archaeology from the Iron Age – to the Medieval would be an advantage.

Informal enquiries should be made to HR Recruitment (email: [email protected]) or to Dr Kevin Walsh ([email protected]).

Salary will be: £31,076 a year and the post is available full time on a fixed term contract for 3 years.
