Fixed term – 3 years

The Institute of Ismaili Studies (IIS) seeks to recruit a Desktop Publishing Officer to assist in the production of educational materials for the pre-school, primary and secondary curricula. These materials form part of an international, multilingual programme in religious and cultural education for the global Ismaili community. They aim to present Islam from civilisational, humanistic and normative perspectives, approaching Muslim societies and traditions from both historical and contemporary contexts.

The post holder will be located in the Design and Production Unit of the Department of Curriculum Studies and will assist in the formatting, typesetting, production and printing of the educational publications in a range of languages using pre-designed templates.

Candidates will have a degree in any one or more of the following: graphic design, typography, the fine arts, or a related discipline. Preference will be given to applicants who have had experience in an educational publishing environment of formatting students’ textbooks, workbooks and teachers’ guides. The post holder should be experienced in producing digital (pdf) artwork for multipage full-colour publications. Experience of formatting publications in Arabic/Dari/Farsi/Urdu is highly desirable.

Applicants will need to demonstrate proficiency in Quark Xpress, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and other related publishing applications such as Adobe Acrobat. Responsibilities include formatting publications in multiple languages, producing diagrams, maps and tables, incorporating corrections, finalising publications to artwork stage, and checking proofs.

The successful candidate will have the ability to manage a heavy workload, be highly motivated, exhibit strong administrative and interpersonal skills, and work collaboratively in a team environment. He/she will need to process religious education materials and deal sensitively with people from a wide range of cultures. Given the nature of this role, attention to detail and accuracy is a must. Applicants are required to upload a portfolio of relevant previous work undertaken, preferably for educational publications, with their application. The portfolio should be in a single PDF file no larger than 5Mb.

Due to UK Immigration regulations we can only accept applications from candidates who have a legal right to work in the UK.

Please apply online with CV and covering letter at www.iis.ac.uk (‘Job Vacancies’ link) where you can also download the job description and person specification. When you upload your portfolio, please ensure it does not exceed 5Mb in size and be aware that it can take up to 20 seconds to upload.

If you have any queries, please email Caroline Gomez in Human Resources [email protected]   The closing date for applications is Monday 18 September 2017.
