A DOCTORAL CANDIDATE POSITION IN ADVANCED MARINE STRUCTURES 

Finnish maritime cluster is known for the complex and high-value products it makes for challenging environment. Collisions and groundings are major risk for maritime transport and Arctic operations can increase this risk if the special environmental conditions and their impact to ship design are not properly understood. The present position focuses on strength of thin-walled ship structures and their non-linear response. The material considered vary from normal to high strength steels. The research methods include both theoretical and experimental techniques. Therefore, the applicants are expected to possess experience on one or several of the following fields: 

  • Ship structures and naval architecture
  • Solid mechanics, material technology and/or lightweight structures
  • Crashworthiness analysis
  • Analytical, numerical (Finite Element Method) and/or experimental work.

RequirementsThe call is open for candidates with a Master's degree in marine technology or any other relevant discipline associated with thesis topics. The candidates are expected to be proactive, capable to work in teams, goal-oriented and to possess a good potential in knowledge, skills and attitude towards post-graduate studies in multidisciplinary field of science.

EmploymentThe expected duration of doctoral studies is four years, but a contract is at first made for one year, and the extension is subject to advance of studies and research.  The salary is according to the salary system of Aalto University.
