Applications are invited for a highly motivated professional seeking to develop a career in Health and Safety in a medical research setting.

The Deputy Safety Officer will join a small team of core staff who look after the day-to-day management of the Institute. Working closely with the Institute’s Safety Officer you will have the personal drive and initiative to advise, manage and report on all aspects of health and safety for the Institute. You will be expected to help maintain high standards by regularly monitoring and reviewing current practice and implementing any changes to comply with University policy.

You will have a degree of equivalent experience in biological sciences with substantial laboratory experience or relevant health and safety management experience. A comprehensive knowledge of isotopes currently used in biomedical research and how to mitigate risk in working with these is essential, as is a thorough understanding of the legislation of work with GM microorganisms and infectious pathogens. As the role involves interaction with a large number of staff, at all levels of seniority, across the building and the wider university, it is essential the appointee has excellent communication and interpersonal skills. You will be highly organized in order to meet deadlines and maintain comprehensive reporting systems.

The position is funded and fixed-term for 3 years in the first instance as part of the Institute’s core team. The Institute is happy to receive applications from those wishing to work flexibly to cover the role.
