Purpose and Main Duties
The Research Grants and Contracts Office is part of Finance Department and provides administrative, financial and support services related to externally funded research grants and contracts and consultancy activities.
We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and motivated Research Support Officer to join our busy team. The post holder will be fully involved in the day-to-day administration of grant applications and research contracts, and delivery of pre and elements of post award support.
The Research Support Officer will be responsible for their own portfolio of academic departments, dealing with the full range of funding bodies, including the Research Councils, charities, government departments, the European Commission and industrial funders.
The successful candidate will have a thorough understanding of research grant funding in the UK, a track record of successfully working with academic colleagues to support the development and submission of proposals and the ability to explain complex policies and procedures to non-experts. Liaison with research funding bodies, academics and administrators across Birkbeck is a key part of the job.
In addition it is desirable that candidates have experience of working in the higher education sector and be able to demonstrate a good understanding of current national and UK research funders’ policies, including open access, research impact and research data management. It is also desirable that the candidates be able demonstrate knowledge of European Commission research funding and IP issues in the academic environment.

Salary: Grade 7 of the College's London Pay Scale which is £36,548 rising to £41,772 per annum.
This post is full time, 35 hours per week (1.0 FTE) and open-ended. The salary quoted above is on the College's London Pay Scale and includes a consolidated Weighting/Allowance which applies only to staff whose normal contractual place of work is in the Greater London area. The initial salary will be dependent on the skills and experience of the successful applicant. The appointment is subject to a probationary period of 6 months.
