Detail information about job PhD Studentship: Multiphysics Predictive Modelling for Polymer Composites. Terms and conditions vacancy

Location: University Park

Applications are invited for a PhD position in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Nottingham. The successful candidate will be part of the Centre of Structural Engineering and Informatics which has excellent laboratory and computational facilities and carries out research across key disciplines of Engineering. The successful candidate will also be a member of the National Structural Integrity Research Centre where they will also spend part of their PhD studies.

We are looking for an ambitious student with a keen interest on computational mechanics to undertake work on the predictive modelling of polymer based composite materials. The overarching aim of the project will be to introduce a novel paradigm for simulating the physics of such materials from manufacturing to operation and provide tangible estimates on their durability. The candidate will have access to the University of Nottingham High Performance Computing facility; a high performance "Beowulf-class" compute cluster comprised of many standard components (e.g. high specification computer servers) networked together by high performance interconnect, and with the necessary software to make it capable of performing very large calculations, involving hundreds of compute cores, and several terabytes (TB) of computer memory. Lloyd’s Register Foundation funds the advancement of engineer-related education and research and supports work that enhances safety of life at sea, on land and in the air. Lloyd’s Register Foundation is partly funded by the profits of their trading arm Lloyd’s Register Group Limited, a global engineering, technical and business services organisation. NSIRC is a state-of-the-art postgraduate engineering facility established and managed by structural integrity specialist TWI. NSIRC aims to deliver cutting edge research and highly qualified personnel to its key industrial partners.

Candidates should have a First or equivalent in Engineering, Applied Mathematics or related disciplines. Overseas applicants should also submit IELTS results (overall 6 with each element >=5.5) if applicable. Applications from candidates with a solid background in Computational Mechanics are particularly welcome. The candidate should be proficient in Matlab. Programming skills in Fortran and/or C++ are also welcome. Good written and verbal communication skills are also essential.

This project is funded by Lloyds Register Foundation and TWI. Funding will also be available from the Faculty of Engineering based on the candidate’s academic credentials. The studentship will provide successful Home/EU students with a stipend of £16k/year and will cover the cost of tuition fees. Overseas applicants are welcome to apply, however total funding in this case is capped at £24k/year. The researcher is expected to start February the 1st 2017.

For informal enquiries please contact Dr Savvas Triantafyllou, tel: 0115 951 4108, or email: [email protected]. To apply, please send a CV, a covering letter stating how your interests and experience relate to the project, your academic transcripts, and the names and email addresses of two academic referees to Dr Savvas Triantafyllou, [email protected]
