Detail information about job Senior Research Fellow (80775-087). Terms and conditions vacancy

Fixed Term for 5 Years.

The Centre for Fusion, Space and Astrophysics (CFSA) within the Department of Physics at the University of Warwick seeks to make a senior research appointment in the area of Computational Plasma Physics. Applicants will have a strong research track record. This position provides an ideal career development opportunity during which to build an independent research reputation whilst interacting strongly with existing CFSA activity. This research activity is part of a strategic expansion in Warwick Physics that, if successful, may provide career opportunities beyond the 5-year fixed-term contract.

The primary tasks include:

1. Pursue research in computational plasma physics as applied to laser-plasma interactions, inertial fusion, or magnetic confinement fusion.

CFSA has an extensive portfolio of simulation codes currently in use, spanning most levels of description of the plasma state: fully kinetic particle-in-cell, hybrid, Vlasov, gyrokinetic and magnetohydrodynamic. CFSA hosts the 600-user EPOCH open collaboration particle-in-cell code. We welcome candidates whose research might additionally contribute to other fields of activity within CFSA, for example solar-terrestrial plasmas and advanced data characterisation.

2. Initiate, build and sustain international research.

CFSA has active current collaborations with most large international facilities for plasma fusion research. Within the UK, CFSA has broad long-term programmes of joint research with: AWE Aldermaston; the Central Laser Facility; and Culham Centre for Fusion Energy together with the wider Eurofusion programme. This vacancy also reflects Warwick’s commitment to long-term partnership, including a continuous local presence, with leading academic and research centres in California, in particular the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory; see e.g. http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/about/cali/

3. Assist development and delivery of advanced teaching in computational plasma physics.

Warwick is committed to research-led undergraduate teaching, and computational plasma physics is among our research strengths. The Senior Research Fellow will have the opportunity, if desired, to contribute up to 20% of his/her time to teaching. Along with newly appointed Assistant Professor in Computational Plasma Physics and other faculty, the appointee could play a key role in developing new advanced teaching in computational plasma physics for final year undergraduate and Masters students.

The University of Warwick maintains a global outlook and has affiliates around the globe. The Department of Physics will provide an exciting and highly supportive environment in which academics can develop their careers. We are fully committed to equality of opportunity and encourage application and enquiries from all suitably qualified candidates.

To be considered for this position, please complete the online application. Please note that we are recruiting for two posts in Computational Plasma Physics: Assistant Professor and Senior Research Fellow. If you wish to be considered for both positions, you must make two separate applications.

For informal discussions, please contact Professor Tony Arber [email protected] or Professor Richard Dendy [email protected].

Closing Date: 30 November 2017
