Detail information about job Chair in Combinatorics. Terms and conditions vacancy

Salary: Competitive package for an outstanding candidate.

Location: Birmingham main campus; Jinan University, Guangzhou, China

In a major strategic initiative, the University of Birmingham in collaboration with Jinan University, Guangzhou, China, has set up a Joint Institute for Teaching and Research, located in the Jinan University south campus. The Institute is launching several undergraduate degree programmes in mathematics commencing in September 2017 to be taught in Guangzhou, with the mathematics component to be delivered by the University of Birmingham. This initiative will result in the recruitment of significant numbers of new staff to the School of Mathematics. It is envisaged that each year these post holders will make several trips to Guangzhou of one month’s duration to deliver intensive periods of teaching.

We are looking for an outstanding individual to play a leading role in the management, development and delivery of these programmes. The successful candidate will contribute to the School in general and join the research group in Combinatorics, Probability and Algorithms within the School of Mathematics at the University of Birmingham. This vibrant research group has an excellent international reputation; the profile and research interests of the members of the group may be found at: http://web.mat.bham.ac.uk/combinatorics/

Applications are invited from outstanding candidates who are interested in helping to shape these new programmes.  Candidates are expected to contribute substantially to maintaining and enhancing the School’s high standards in teaching to a broad range of students. They should have a proven track record of research leadership, grant capture and a proven international reputation for research in combinatorics. The Combinatorics, Probability and Algorithms Research Group is particularly interested in enhancing its strengths in extremal and probabilistic combinatorics.

The School of Mathematics is ranked ninth in the Guardian University Guide 2017, scoring a 90% overall student satisfaction rate in the 2016 NSS. In REF 2014 the School was ranked sixth overall and third in the Russell Group for its percentage of 3* and 4* outputs. The School of Mathematics currently has over 60 academic and research staff who collaborate widely both internally and externally.

In recognition of its commitment to promoting women in science the School of Mathematics holds a Bronze Athena SWAN award.

This post is available from 1 January 2018, or as soon as possible thereafter.
