In collaboration with Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy and DONG Energy, the universities of Sheffield, Durham, and Hull have been awarded funding of £7.6m from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), to bring together two major industrial players, with world-leading academic researchers from three universities.

The aim of the 5-year programme is to address fundamental research to reduce the cost of electricity from offshore wind, and lays the foundation for the next generation of wind turbines and farms at a significantly higher level of power generation. It ultimately enables more affordable and efficient technology to facilitate growth of offshore wind power (OSW) to meet energy needs worldwide. It provides growth in the UK OSW supply chain, meeting the national needs of growth in the low-carbon economy, achieving UK CO2 emissions-targets, and ensuring resilient low-cost energy.

The Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering is respected internationally for the important contributions it makes in this field. It has the second highest research income in the UK in this subject area. We are a vibrant community of 46 academic staff, including 22 professors, 76 research staff, 34 technical staff, 26 administrative staff, and over 800 undergraduate and postgraduate students. The Department is organised into four research groups: Communications and Imaging, Electrical Machines and Drives, Centre for Computational Imaging & Simulation Technologies in Biomedicine (CISTIB), and Semiconductor Materials and Devices. Applications are invited to undertake research on wind power, permanent magnet generators and controls within The Electrical Machines and Drives (EMD) Group. The post holders will work within the “A New Partnership in Offshore Wind” EPSRC project joining a team of leading academic and industrial partners to address key research challenges required to reduce the levelised cost of electricity from offshore wind, and lays the foundation for the next generation of wind turbines and farms at a significantly higher level of power generation.

The project requires a strong scientific background in one or more of the expertise areas including electromagnetics, electrical machines, power electronics and drives, controls, condition monitoring, fault diagnosis, etc. In addition, it requires strong experimental skills, expertise in numerical computation and control engineering techniques. The successful candidates must have excellent communication and interactions skills as they will be required to work flexibly across the five institutions and industries, sharing facilities, resources, and expertise. It is essential for the successful candidate to hold a PhD (or be near completion) in permanent magnet machines and/or controls, or have equivalent, relevant experience.

This post is fixed-term for a period of 36 months with a projected start date of 1 October 2017 (with potential to be extended until 30 September 2022 subject to funding).
