Campus: Primarily based at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital within the Imperial College Centre for Engagement and Simulation Science.

Applications are invited for a Research Assistant/Associate position in Simulation and Gaming within the Simulation and Modelling in Medicine and Surgery research group in the Division of Surgery. The Division is a world leader in simulation research with strong links to engineering, computing and related disciplines within and outside Imperial.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a multidisciplinary team of researchers using Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and haptics (touch feedback) to develop simulator prototypes and simulation tools for training, assessment and patient engagement (www.imperial.ac.uk/simms). Led by Dr Fernando Bello, the team consists of computer scientists, clinicians, design engineers, prosthetics experts and educationalists. The project is a collaboration between Imperial College London, MIRA Rehab Ltd (www.mirarehab.com) and MedCity (www.medcityhq.com) on the use of gaming and simulation in rehabilitation. Part of the Collaborate to Innovate Programme, it is supported by the European Union European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), which is part funding this post.

This post requires design, programming and engineering abilities, as well as good communication, interpersonal and organisational skills. The ideal candidate will be educated to postgraduate degree level (MSc for appointment as Research Assistant or PhD for appointment as Research Associate) in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline (e.g. Computing, Computer Science, Electronic, Applied Mathematics, Physics), have practical experience in developing software for visualisation, gaming and/or medical / surgical simulation, strong C/C++ programming skills and a solid foundation in maths and physics.

The post is full time for a fixed term of 12 months in the first instance.
