Detail information about job Head of Learning Enhancement (Academic Skills). Terms and conditions vacancy
The University of Birmingham is a highly ambitious and pioneering academic institution. Recently awarded Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework, we pride ourselves on excellent research-led teaching and the employability of our students. Library Services plays a key part in ensuring academic attainment across our diverse student population, and it supports the development of transferrable skills for progression to further study and employment.
This exciting role is based within the Academic Engagement Division of Library Services which is located primarily in the inspiring new Main Library (opened in 2016) at the heart of our award-winning green campus.
You will be responsible for overseeing the development and delivery of a broad range of academic skills services across Schools and Colleges in support of the University’s Education Strategy. The broad learning enhancement remit of Library Services currently encompasses academic writing, learning skills, information and digital literacy, peer learning schemes, and mathematics and statistical support. As an expert in academic skills, you will directly oversee a significant element of this remit, supporting the Assistant Director with shaping the overall service strategy, and collaborating particularly closely with the two other Heads of Learning Enhancement (Digital Literacy; and Learning and Progression). You will feel confident working with a wide range of academic and professional services staff across the University to inform and shape the direction of the service.
You will join us at an important time as we realise the opportunities provided by a recent reconfiguration of the Library Academic Engagement division. As a team manager, you will possess strong interpersonal and leadership skills. You will be responsible for developing innovative and sustainable ways to embed a wide range of academic and information literacies into the curriculum for all our taught students, irrespective of the mode of programme delivery. You must, therefore, be able to demonstrate effective planning and negotiation skills, with the ability to balance competing agendas and priorities to reach an effective outcome. You will also have a strong customer service ethos, and be committed to pedagogic currency in a higher education context.
