Detail information about job Head of Development. Terms and conditions vacancy

Founded in 1841, The London Library is one of the most important literary organisations in the country.  Housed in its historic building close to Piccadilly Circus is a collection of over one million books and periodicals that forms the basis for the largest independent lending library in the world.  Independent in thought and spirit and proud of being so, the Library receives no public funding and is entirely self-financing, relying on membership and philanthropic support.  Past members have ranged from Charles Dickens to George Eliot and Virginia Woolf to Winston Churchill and amongst its 6,600 members today are leading writers, scholars and researchers.  The Patron of the Library is HM The Queen and Sir Tom Stoppard has just stood down as President, after 15 years, but will join the Library’s Vice-Presidents, which already include Lord Boateng, Caroline Michel, Jeremy Paxman and Sir Tim Rice.

This is an exciting time to join The London Library.  Having celebrated our 175th Anniversary in 2016 with a three-day literary festival and a very successful 175 Appeal, we are now looking towards the future.  With an eye to celebrating 200 years, we need to explore how best to continue the Library’s astonishing tradition of supporting new writing and reading whilst celebrating the remarkable history which we hold.  Innovative plans will range from creating new channels of content through to reshaping parts of the building.  However, this programme will only be possible if we can achieve both major gifts to establish a significant Innovation Fund (£2.5m already raised) and a strengthened annual revenue programme to ensure a solid foundation upon which to build.

Working closely with the Development Director and leading a team of three, the Head of Development will play a key role in creating and implementing a coherent fundraising strategy for the revenue programme, ensuring that it reaches all relevant donor audiences.  This will involve both overseeing current work, as undertaken by the two development managers, and creating ambitious new programmes that will inspire new donors.

You will be confident in your approach, with credibility, pragmatism and resilience, and have the essential ability to show good judgement when working with key internal and external stakeholders.  You will feel strongly about supporting and developing talent as well as providing clear leadership and encouragement, and be able to demonstrate an aptitude for doing so.

Strong and proven experience, including demonstrable experience of securing significant support from individuals and/or trusts and foundations is important but we are also keen to see ambition, innovation and creativity.  This is an opportunity for someone to hone their major-gift fundraising skills, gain experience of diversifying/expanding the income and relationships of the Library, and to work closely with donors at the very highest net-worth level.

Experience gained in the cultural or academic fields is particularly welcome.

Benefits include:

  • 30 days annual leave plus 11 days when the Library is closed for business
  • Group personal pension scheme
  • Daily meal allowance
  • Season ticket and bicycle loans
  • Discounts on staff purchases and borrowing
  • Training and development to fulfil career potential
