This post will provide comprehensive technical support for the Schools Challenge Programme and for ensuring that the Reach Out Makerspace is properly equipped and resourced for activities.

The role is vital to the start-up and initial operation of the newly built Reach Out Makerspace, situated at the Invention Rooms at Imperial College London White City Campus. The Reach Out Makerspace is an innovative space, designed for school-aged pupils in the local community, established to give the participants the opportunity to design, build and explore STEM and the arts through hands-on approaches led by academics and/or the central Outreach team. The Reach Out Maker Space will house a wide variety of equipment, users and activities and as such the post requires flexibility and a multi-disciplinary approach to work, alongside a keen willingness to get involved and share good practice across programmes.

Main Duties & responsibilities

  • Provision of technical support to the Schools Challenge Programme, workshop leaders and programme coordinators using the space to run outreach activities
  • To ensure any faults or breakages are reported to the appropriate repair body and dealt with swiftly so that the space can be in full operational use
  • To perform simple equipment maintenance tasks
  • To report any repairs or faulty equipment to the Maker Space coordination and ensure equipment are labelled accordingly
  • Responsible for maintaining the workshop and prep room in a good working order with adequate provision of general equipment and materials
  • Responsible for the handling, storage and disposal of different workshop materials
  • Preparing equipment and materials before scheduled sessions in the Reach Out Makerspace
  • Supporting the activity sessions where necessary – e.g. clearing activity areas during sessions, supporting students using new equipment etc.
  • Returning equipment and materials to their stored locations at the end of sessions
  • Liaison with Outreach and Academic staff over the requirements of the activity sessions and stocks of materials
  • Organisation of the consumables and equipment inventories
  • Organising purchasing of materials and consumables where needed
  • Performing regular safety checks on equipment
  • Responsibility for  the good working order of large equipment, such as 3D printers,

This is a 6 months contract with view to extend, funding dependent
