There is a vacancy for a full time/part time position in the Biomaterials Section of the Applied Biotechnology Research Group, led by Professor Ipsita Roy, at the Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Westminster, London, UK. The candidate needs to preferably have a background in Biochemical Engineering/Process Engineering with experience in Fermentation Technology and scaling up of a biochemical processes. Experience in the production of Polyhydroxyalkanoates using microbial fermentation will be a highly desirable experience. In addition, a knowledge base of Biomaterials, their characterisation, processing and application in biomedical applications will be of added advantage. 

This post is funded by a UKERI project, entitled, ‘The molecular mechanism of angiogenesis and neurogenesis in multicellular 3D culture of tumour cells using PHA based in vitro 3D models. It is in collaboration with Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India. The work at the University of Westminster will involve the production of Polyhydroxyalkanoates, a family of biocompatible polymers with a range of mechanical properties in order to produce 3D models with mechanical properties that mimic solid tumour; Development of 3D models with suitable dimensions, controlled porosity, with and without a controlled oxygen gradient, for the development of a model representing the hypoxic core found in tumours and finally measurement of oxygen level in the 3D model.

The post holder must be strongly motivated and must have the ability to define his/her research questions. The post holder will preferably specialise in Biochemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Fermentation Technology, Microbial Biotechnology or a related subject area and have good written and oral communication skills in English. Relevant industrial experience in the area of biochemical engineering/microbial technology/biomedical engineering will be desirable. In addition, knowledge base in biomaterials will be highly desirable. If desired by the candidate, the post holder can in addition register for a PhD under the guidance of Professor Ipsita Roy. If the chosen candidate is not a home student they will need an overall IELTS score of 7.0 in order to additionally register for a PhD.
