Applications are invited for a Research Associate to undertake research in ceramic manufacturing using advanced powder processes. This work is part of a large EPSRC-funded manufacturing hub (MAPP, https://mapp.ac.uk/) which also involves the universities of Sheffield, Manchester, Leeds and Oxford as well as a number of industrial partners. 

You will work on an exciting project to develop new powder-based processing techniques for the fabrication of ceramics and ceramic-composites with controlled microstructures. The project will build on the group’s experience in additive manufacturing. It aims to fabricate ceramic-based materials with complex shapes and improved functional and mechanical performance by using additive manufacturing to manipulate their structure at multiple length scales. The work involves the developing of inks for the 3D printing of ceramics and the characterization of their structure and mechanical response. An enthusiastic and highly motivated individual is sought possessing a strong background in experimental chemistry, material science, ceramic processing, structural and mechanical characterization, rheology and the characterization of ceramic suspensions, together with a demonstrated capacity to learn new skills/techniques quickly. You will be responsible primarily for the design and 3D printing of ceramic-based structures as well as their structural and mechanical characterization.  You will work with our academic and industrial collaborators in the MAPP project.

You will be offered extensive opportunities for collaborative work, both within and external to Imperial College, including abroad and with industrial partners. In addition to the research, there is the opportunity for the post holder to develop teaching experience. For example, organising an undergraduate lab experiment, supervising MEng research projects and helping with the supervision of PhD students on linked projects.

Successful completion of a PhD (or equivalent) in Materials, Chemistry, Physics or related scientific/engineering discipline is required. Previous experience in rheology, ceramic processing and mechanical and structural characterization would be an advantage though not entirely necessary.

This is a Full-Time, Fixed Term contract for two years.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £32,380 - £34,040 per annum.
