Applications are invited for the post of Research Associate in the Department of Materials, at Imperial College London, to Dr Mark Wenman’s group.

This is an exciting opportunity to work on a large grant awarded to Imperial College London, Oxford University and Manchester University together with the National Nuclear Laboratory, Culham Centre for Fusion Energy, Rolls-Royce, University of New South Wales and the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO).

The researcher will be employed by Imperial College, with scientific guidance and supervision from the Department of Materials. He/she will be leading a research project investigating the role of microstructure and processing history on the phenomenon of neutron irradiation embrittlement in reactor pressure vessel steels. The steels investigated will all be of the same chemical composition of A508 class 3 but manufactured using different methods. There will be forged (as used today), hot isostatically pressed and electron beam welded materials. The position involves leading the irradiation work, which will be carried out at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Institute (ANSTO), in Sydney Australia, under the guidance of Prof Lyndon Edwards. The key tasks will be to help oversee the technical and safety aspects of carrying out irradiations in the OPAL reactor, the micro-mechanical testing, microscopy and packaging/transport of the materials to be sent back to the UK’s Materials Research Facility at Culham. The PDRA will also be expected to interact with, and give presentations to, the other members of the research consortium as well as being expected to help in supervising a PhD student attached to the project and Masters students in their research projects within the group.

The person employed is expected to be available to start at the latest by 1 Dec 2017.

You should have a PhD degree (or equivalent) in an area pertinent to the research subject, e.g. metallurgy/materials science and should provide evidence of research by published output. Ideally you should also have experience of mechanical testing, microscopy and working within a nuclear facility. Prior hot cell experience is also highly desirable but not essential as training will be provided. 

This post will be based at the Department of Materials, Imperial College, South Kensington Campus but will involve extended periods at ANSTO in Australia.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £32,380 - £34,040 per annum.
