Overview

Electric vehicle sales grew 60 percent worldwide last year. In order to increase future growth in electric vehicles a fully developed EV charging infrastructure is required. The installation of the EV charging infrastructure is, however, growing slower compared to EV sales. In order to speed up charging installation a new revolutionary charging infrastructure idea has been proposed called Tracked Electric Vehicle System (TEV). TEV is a premanufactured road that is designed for EVs to be charged during driving. TEV is a dynamic road charging concept that will also provide a platform where EVs will drive autonomously, at high speed and in convoys. The PhD Project is to research and to develop the design of the TEV concept.

Newcastle University has a long standing and vibrant international leading research group in the field of electric vehicles. This project is funded by a UK company and general information on the TEV concept can be found in http://tevproject.com/. You will be part of the Electrical Power Research Group which is Britain’s largest academic research group in the field of Electrical Power with over 100 researchers and 110 MSC students.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants should be educated to at least BEng (Hons) level and should have a good understanding in power electronics and materials. Applicants should have typically a 1st degree in (electrical/mechanical) or physics. Applicants with a 2.1 are welcome to apply but must show clearly evidence of strength in power electronics engineering and materials science.

International applicants are welcome too but must have a 1st degree in a relevant MSc program.

Finally it is expected from the candidate to be passionate about cars and transport.
