Job Summary

The School of Pharmacy & Life Sciences requires an Applications Supervisor dedicated to the support of staff and students in the delivery and development of Analytical Science.

Supporting staff and students in the delivery of Analytical Science, you will be responsible for the development and operation of the laboratory practical programme for undergraduate and postgraduate students, ensuring efficient utilisation of resources. You will assist in the assessment of students in laboratory exercises and project work, ensuring compliance with Health & Safety requirements. You will operate and maintain specialist Analytical Science equipment as well as proposing, researching, and developing laboratory exercises.

Job Description

PURPOSE OF THE POST: The Analytical Science laboratory in the Sir Ian Wood Building is a fully utilised Lab and plays a pivotal role in the provision of practical laboratory classes for all science based undergraduate and postgraduate courses currently delivered in the School of Pharmacy and Life Sciences. It is essential to have an experienced member of staff who is responsible for the day to day management of specified laboratories, oversees the safe use and maintenance of the equipment on a daily basis, and has the expertise to develop and update student exercises in this area. There may also be a Health and Safety role within the School.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES: 

  • To provide support for the School's undergraduate and taught postgraduate programmes and research activities.
  • Undertake the role of laboratory coordinator.
  • To contribute to subject specific teaching.
  • To supervise and assist in the assessment of students in laboratory exercises and project work.
  • To ensure compliance with Health & Safety requirements for staff and students working on these laboratory programmes.
  • To operate and maintain specialist Analytical Science equipment. 
  • To propose, research, develop, write, and test laboratory exercises.
  • To assist in the planning and scheduling of laboratory practical exercises, ensuring the efficient utilisation of resources. 
  • To liaise with external agencies as appropriate in connection with instrumentation. 
  • Assist in specifying and procuring any new equipment for Analytical Science. 
  • Undertakes appropriate professional development.
  • Where appropriate to undertake consultancy work for the benefit of the School.
  • To carry out other duties as required by the Head of School.

Person Specification

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Qualifications and Professional Memberships: Minimum degree of BSc level or equivalent.
  • Knowledge and Experience: Knowledge of the theory, safe operation, and application of a wide range of experimentation in Analytical Science.
  • Experience of working in an analytical laboratory.
  • Experience of training others, e.g. trainees, or demonstrating practical skills and techniques to other colleagues.
  • Experience of safe working practice (health & safety awareness, including risk assessment).
  • Excellent time-management and organisational skills.

DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience of instruction and supervision of students in use of specialist instrumentation, apparatus, and techniques.
  • Registration with a relevant professional body.
  • Knowledge and Experience: Preparation of training materials for specific technical tasks.
