The Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the University of Strathclyde wishes to appoint an Early Stage Researcher (ESR) Fellow within a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network MEAN4SG. The Network is in the area of smart grids metrology.

The ESR Fellow will work on a research project ‘Design and implementation of low-cost PMU (Phasor Measurement Unit) platforms’. The student will cover a range of different scientific areas: the impacts of noise and other phenomena on measurands, via complex signal processing algorithms; microcontroller architectures and peripheral interfacing; and digital communication protocols.

The ESR Fellow will be supported for 2 years of full-time study towards a PhD. They will receive technical training at Strathclyde and will attend a series of training workshops through the Network. The ESR Fellow will be expected to spend time working with academic and industrial collaborators in the Network and be required to contribute to project meetings and to coordinate with project partners.

The ESR Fellow will take part in 2 secondments. It is expected that approximately 4 months will be spent at NPL (National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, London, UK), and approximately 4 months will be spent at METAS in Bern, Switzerland.

Applicants will be required to meet Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher (ESR) eligibility criteria. In particular, you must not have resided in the UK for more than 12 months in the last 3 years immediately prior to commencing in the role, and you must not have been awarded a Doctoral Degree. Applicants must also be in the first four years of their research career.

In addition to the above, you will have a 2:1 Degree or equivalent in a relevant subject such as Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Physics, or Computer Science. You will have a strong background in your core discipline, a good understanding of relevant undergraduate project in the field of power systems metrology, or have experience of such work in industry. You will have an ability to undertake research and disseminate results and you will be creative, with the ability to apply initiative and problem solve. You will have excellent communication skills with the ability to interact with a range of stakeholders and you will have excellent technical presentation skills. You will have excellent organisational skills and be able to work well both independently and as part of a team.

Whilst not essential for the role, applications are welcomed from candidates with a 1st class honours degree and/or MSc-with-distinction in a relevant subject. The successful candidate will receive a financial package consisting of a living allowance, a family allowance (where applicable) and a mobility allowance, according to the rules for Early Stage Researchers (ESRs). The minimum salary will be approximately £29,578 per annum.
