Detail information about job Research Associate. Terms and conditions vacancy

Fixed Term until 31 October 2019

Based within the Centre for Manufacturing and Materials Engineering (MME) at Coventry University this exciting and innovative project aims to develop selective electrochemical deposition onto textiles and fabrics in the MATUROLIFE project. The position is funded by the European Commission via the Horizon 2020 NMBP call and involves 20 partners from 9 European countries and will give you the opportunity to work with a variety of industrial, academic, research and NGOs from across Europe. MATUROLIFE is a collaboration between artistic and creative designers and materials science. The materials part of the project will selectively electrochemically deposit copper onto textiles and fabrics which can then be used as electronic circuitry to produce assistive technology for older people. Within the materials part of the project the specific objectives for the appointed RA will be to functionalise metal nanoparticles, investigate a range of techniques for the selective deposition of electroless copper catalysts and perform any optimisation of the electroless copper formulation/operating conditions. The RA will be expected ensure knowledge transfer of the developed selective metallisation process to the industrial partners and support scale-up.

This high profile project will provide the appointed person with the opportunity to work with experts in electrochemical deposition processes within the Functional Materials Group at Coventry University. The highly innovative aspects of the project, together with the opportunity to work in a joint industrial and academic consortium are an invaluable combination for someone who wants to become a future leader in high value manufacturing.

The package will offer the opportunity to travel within Europe and work closely with the industrial partners in the consortium.

Applicants must have a PhD in a chemistry or materials based subject, preferably electrochemistry. A background in electrochemical deposition systems (particularly electroless plating and pre-treatment processes) would be extremely advantageous as would any previous experience of working with textiles and fabrics. Expertise in the functionalisation of metal nanoparticles and methods to characterise those functionalised nanoparticles would be desirable. The successful candidate will have excellent R&D skills, understand project management and be extremely adaptable and flexible. The appointed person will be able to work to tight timescales, have the ability to communicate effectively and present research results clearly and concisely at consortium meetings and to integrate quickly and effectively into a multi-national research team. In line with the pan-European nature of this project, the candidate must be willing and able to travel extensively within Europe.

The successful candidate should have a strong track record in publishing high quality research papers (or demonstrate a plan to do so) and be keen to present at prestigious international conferences.
