The Post

This new post has been created to support the development of a more strategic and focused approach to research business development, knowledge exchange and enterprise opportunities across the Faculty of Social Sciences and to achieve the ambitious targets set out in the Faculty Research Strategy and the University Plan.

The post holder will be a member of the Research Support Team, reporting to the Research Support Manager and working closely with Faculty academic research leadership. The essential role of the team is to maintain a real-time overview of all research related activity in the Faculty to enable and facilitate the growth and the enhancement of Faculty’s research. The team provides the first point of contact for advice and guidance on research related issues to Faculty staff and students as well as proactively manages the research activity by closely working together with other professional services in the Faculty and wider University, particularly, with the Research and Innovation Services (RIS).

Collaborative, timely, and informed approach is essential to ensure that the Faculty is able to identify and capitalise on research opportunities through joined-up and efficient development, delivery and communication processes. To support this the post holder will be expected to provide high-quality professional support to a diverse range of Faculty research activities and advice to relevant staff and students. The post holder will need to ensure that processes and procedures are customer focused as well as being strategically aligned and compliant with University and external regulatory requirements.

Description of Duties

  • Work with the Research Support Manager to support the monitoring of the Faculty Research Strategy and REF preparation progress and timely reporting to the Faculty research leadership.
  • Support the operation of the Faculty research governance structure, including Research and Knowledge Exchange Committee (RKEC), Research Groups and other structures, coordinating timely arrangements for the meetings and where required provide accurate minute taking and proactive monitoring and reporting.
  • Provide effective and efficient professional administrative support to a range of activities which support research life cycle from research idea development to research project completion. Act as an interface between the RIS, academic staff and other professional services to maximise the level of service delivery.
  • Liaising with RIS and academic staff, keep an up to date overview and provide reports on the research application and project development, Faculty approvals and University peer review progress. As appropriate and where required, provide support to the research bid development, including estimate costings.
  • Be the primary point of contact within the Faculty for all research related project information. Work with the Research Support Manager to maintain an overview of research project budgets and monitor the spending, including checks that the project expenditure complies with the rules and regulations. Provide updates to project leads and Faculty management as required.
