Detail information about job Bodleian Japanese Librarian. Terms and conditions vacancy

Combining with the collection of the Nissan Institute Library, the Bodleian Japanese Library was created and opened to readers as the University's principal collections relating to Japan. We are now seeing a Bodleian Japanese Librarian.

As Bodleian Japanese Librarian you will have a rare chance to manage one of the most important Japanese teaching and research collections in Europe. You will enjoy overall responsibility for supporting the study of Japan in Oxford in all its facets, from ancient times to the present. You will manage and inspire a small team to deliver high-quality reader services at the Library and also initiate and implement ongoing strategic development of its services and collections, bringing your team with you through the process of change.

This role requires some lifting, carrying or moving books and book transit boxes and you will also be on-call for site emergencies.

You will have a degree in a relevant academic discipline such as Japanese studies and preferably in library/information science. You will have excellent knowledge of written and spoken Japanese and the ability to read classical Japanese. You will also be able to demonstrate excellent knowledge of print and electronic sources for the academic study of Japan. You will have outstanding communication skills and experience of managing staff effectively in a small team environment. You will have worked as a subject librarian in an academic library and will also have experience of working with manuscripts and rare books.

This is a permanent, full-time position.

Owing to the nature of this post, the successful candidate will be required to undertake a Disclosure Scotland check as well as a financial background check. The possession of a criminal record or poor financial background will not necessarily prevent an applicant from obtaining this post, as all cases are judged individually according to the nature of the role and information provided.

This post is part of a pilot scheme testing a new Supporting Evidence Form in place of the more usual ‘supporting statement’. You MUST submit a completed Supporting Evidence Form in order for your application to be processed. Covering letters, supporting statements and CVs will NOT form part of the selection process. Please ensure that you carefully read the How to Apply section provided in the Job Description, which you can download below along with the required Supporting Evidence Form.

Only applications received online by 12.00 midday on Thursday 28 September 2017 can be considered. Interviews are expected to take place on Wednesday 18 October 2017.
