Job DescriptionWe are seeking to recruit a Postdoctoral Fellow to join the Petsalaki research group at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI). You will use high throughput biological datasets, data integration and statistical modelling to study the global cell signaling responses in healthy and disease conditions.

EMBL-EBI is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and it is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation. EMBL-EBI provides freely available data from life science experiments, performs basic research in computational biology and offers an extensive user training programme, supporting researchers in academic and industry. We have close ties with both the University of Cambridge and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute.

Qualifications and ExperienceYou will be a highly motivated, goal-oriented person who performs well working both independently and in collaborative interdisciplinary projects. You should have a deep interest in studying complex biological processes using large-scale biological datasets and be willing to learn new methods and technologies, as required, to successfully complete a project.

To work well with us you should be able to handle your projects independently, and communicate well with the rest of the team. You will also need to be reliable, and manage your time well. Moreover you should be open to sharing your data, ideas and analysis pipelines and tools with other members of the lab and the community.

You should have a PhD in biology, bioinformatics, physics, computer science, engineering or a related field.

The following skills and experience are required:

  • Programming skills: Extensive experience in programming (Python, Perl and/or R at minimum);
  • Familiarity with widely used bioinformatics tools and biological databases;
  • Knowledge in basic statistics;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.

It would be very advantageous if you also have experience in any of the following:

  • Mathematical modelling of cell processes;
  • Development of user-friendly interfaces, web pages and/or bioinformatics tools;
  • Analysis and handling of proteomics and phospho-proteomics datasets;
  • Data-driven network inference from high throughput datasets including gene expression or proteomics datasets.

BenefitsEMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation. The remuneration package comprises a competitive salary, a comprehensive pension scheme and health insurance, educational and other family related benefits where applicable.

Application InstructionsTo apply please submit a covering letter, CV, and 2 reference letters, through our online system. Please do not simply repeat your CV in the covering letter, rather highlight why you would like to join our group and why you would be a good fit.

Additional InformationApplications are welcome from all nationalities - visa information will be discussed in more depth with applicants selected for interview. Please note that the UK's departure from the EU will have no direct impact on EMBL-EBI. UK membership of EMBL and the treaty between EMBL and the UK are separate from the UK's membership of the EU.

EMBL-EBI is committed to achieving gender balance and strongly encourages applications from women.

The initial contract is for a period of two years with the possibility of a fixed-term extension.
