A Research Assistant will be recruited to join the research group of Dr Angela Brueggemann to work on a project related to understanding the prevalence, diversity and therapeutic potential of bacteriocins among pneumococci that were recovered from young children. The successful candidate will share the responsibility (with one experienced doctoral student) for the culture, identification and extraction of DNA from ~3500 bacterial samples for the purposes of whole genome sequencing. The person appointed to this post will be experienced in the laboratory skills required for the culture and identification of common bacteria, e.g. Streptococcus, Haemophilus and Staphylococcus species.
S/he will have experience in high-throughput sample processing (i.e. hundreds or thousands of samples) and automated or semi-automated DNA extractions. S/he will also have experience in populating and maintaining databases to store and manage the data associated with each bacterial sample. The appointee will ideally be skilled at using standard bioinformatics tool to analyse sequence data, although these skills may be learned as part of this appointment. S/he will have experience writing up clear, accurate and high-quality data summaries for research group use.
