Detail information about job Entomologist. Terms and conditions vacancy
Overview Of Role
We have an exciting opportunity for an individual with practical Entomology expertise to join the Rothamsted Insect Survey team, within the Department of Biointeractions and Crop Protection.
The post holder will be required to use their entomological skills to identify insects caught by the Rothamsted Insect Survey's (RIS) network of traps, particularly aphids. They will be expected to submit high quality data derived from the samples to a range of sources that include the RIS database, staff and collaborators. Entomological training will be provided for the successful candidate in order to enable them to be able to identify the 20 aphid bulletin species after 2 years. We would anticipate the successful candidate to be able to tackle the next additional 20 aphid species that are commonest as well as the shortlist of key non-aphid fraction target species (e.g. pollen beetle, cabbage stem flea beetle, ladybirds etc.,) as the RIS moves through the season.
Whilst a degree or professional qualification is not essential for this role, the depth of knowledge required for this role is vast given that there are 600 species of aphid in the UK and thousands of other insects that the individual must identify competently. Speed and accuracy is required in order to be able to process all samples with the ability to curate and archive samples as the need arises.
The post holder will also be involved with our engineer to service traps in the field and help with the construction of new traps. Ideally, the post holder will be practical and have some prior experience of DIY, construction, welding or metalwork. Servicing traps may involve some travel away, and may require occasional overnight stays.
Interviews will be held: 02/10/2017
