We have an exciting opportunity for someone to join the team of Library staff to play a major role in delivering a world-class study environment for University students, staff, and the general public. We aim to deliver a consistently high standard of services across our 5 Library sites: the Western Bank Library, the Diamond, the Information Commons, and the two sites of the Health Sciences Library.

As an academic enterprise, the University Library plays a key role in supporting the needs of our customers. The Library’s Customer Services Team has approximately 80 staff, based in 4 staffed sites. The team is responsible for the delivery of high-quality customer services to members of the University, the NHS, and other library users. These services include lending services, the circulation of library stock, photocopying and printing. We are committed to providing the highest level of service to members of the University, the NHS, and other library users, and we are looking for an enthusiastic, energetic person with a good eye for detail to join us.

Reporting to the senior Customer Services staff at the site, you will act as the first point of contact for library customers either on Welcome or Information desks. Work at these desks could involve responding to customers’ library information and IT enquiries, and dealing with borrower account queries, including the setting up of new borrower accounts. You will also take on a variety of tasks to support the lending service, either helping customers to use the Library’s self-service facilities, issuing requested items, or dealing with borrowers with overdue or invoiced books, plus tasks to support the circulation of library material to customers, including: the retrieval of items to fulfil customer requests, the processing of overdues and invoices, and the sorting and shelving of books according to the library classification system. This is a very active role, requiring the ability to retrieve or shelve library material for several hours a day, quickly and accurately; and being physically able to help students to access the material they need, often involving a great deal of walking about the library buildings.

You will be a people person; our Customer Services Assistants are often the first source of help for customers and this role requires you to have good communication skills and enjoy helping with enquiries. The work of the Customer Services Assistant varies between the library sites and also in response to changing service needs at different times of the year; as a result, we are looking for someone who is happy to work flexibly across all library sites and who enjoys the challenge of change.
