The IET are seeking an enthusiastic stakeholder and government engagement professional with a keen interest in engineering and technology to develop and implement strategic programmes for one of the IET’s key topics – Design and Manufacturing. This role is known internally as the Design and Manufacturing Lead.

The Design and Manufacturing Lead will be joining the Strategic Engagement and Partnership (SEP) team. The SEP team identify current hot topics and key issues of relevance to engineering.  Using this intelligence they develop programmes of activity to address the challenges.  Drawing on the expertise of the IET membership, they inspire technology innovation and in partnership with the members, develop best practice for new fields. They deliver public benefit through the provision of robust, impartial information to key stakeholders, and through influencing government policy.  

As the Design and Manufacturing Lead you will work with internal and external stakeholders at all levels, to identify, develop and verify opportunities for Design and Manufacturing, ensuring that the IET remains a key contributor to and driver of government policy in this area.

Your role will be to establish relationships and deliver programmes of outputs and activities to progress thinking and generate tangible impact; raising the relevance and profile of the IET. The Design and Manufacturing Lead will work to introduce key industry, academic and government figures into the IET. You will also work with and lead a volunteer panel of highly experienced engineers, and manage and develop volunteer and wider stakeholder networks.

Personal Specification

Essential Criteria

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent with an interest in engineering/technology/business and knowledge of the current commercial/industrial/social/political world
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills, with the ability to influence, persuade and motivate at all levels and to establish credibility with senior figures from industry, academia and government
  • Ability to use own initiative whilst demonstrating collaborative working across the wider team and stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to be part of an effective team.
  • Sound organisational and planning skills, with the ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to assimilate complex information quickly
  • An interest in, and knowledge of working with one or more of: Academia; Government, Industry.
  • Interest in the Design and Manufacturing Environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present information to a range of audience.
  • The ability to operate in an agile, matrix-working environment.
  • Project management skills with the ability to manage projects that span multi-disciplinary areas of differing size and complexity to meet business expectations and deliver results.
  • High level of IT literacy.
  • Ability to attend the London office and travel to other national, and occasionally international, locations as the needs of the role and the development of the portfolio requires
