Detail information about job Web Infrastructure Engineer. Terms and conditions vacancy

The University of York is one of the UK’s leading universities. Founded on principles of excellence, equality and opportunity for all. Centred in the picturesque village of Heslington on the edge of the historic city of York, our colleges are set in an attractive landscaped campus. We’re an employer of choice and offer range of benefits such as flexible working, long holidays and a generous pension seldom seen in the other sectors.

The Role We are looking for a Web Infrastructure Engineer who can support our existing infrastructure, develop our build and deployment pipelines and help us start building new services using AWS. By joining us now, as we plan and design this new approach, you will have the opportunity to influence the implementation and gain a great deal of experience in the process.

Key Requirements You will have a good understanding of modern approaches to high availability web services and their management (including CDNs, containers and orchestration tools) as well as a keen interest in build engineering and the tools that support it. Some experience of managing and deploying services using AWS or another cloud service provider would be beneficial.

If you have experience in the following areas or can demonstrate the ability to quickly gain these skills this is a great opportunity to work in a collaborative and supportive team.

  • HAproxy/Apache/Tomcat
  • Configuration management using Puppet
  • Development tools (Jenkins, JIRA, Bitbucket)
  • Tools for service monitoring (Icinga, Logstash, Kibana)

You can look forward to being part of a team that are making big changes to our development approach and the services that we offer. We support the development of bespoke applications that provide staff and students with simple but powerful tools that support the work of one of the top Universities in the UK. As a team we look for people who like to be constantly learning so we provide as much support as possible for this including time to investigate new technologies and attendance at relevant conferences (like the recent AWS summit).

This post is available on a full-time basis, on an open contract, available immediately. A flexi-time scheme operates which allows for flexible working within operational guidelines.

It is anticipated that technical tests will take place in advance of formal interviews, which will be held on 02 October 2017.

For an informal discussion about the role please contact Andrew Male, Assistant Director (Enterprise Systems Group), 01904 324452 or [email protected].
