Faculty of Science
Applications are invited for a Senior Research Associate in the group of Dr María Paz Muñoz-Herranz in the School of Chemistry at the University of East Anglia, to work in a multidisciplinary research project funded by NERC, in collaboration with Dr Carol Robinson (PI) in the School of Environmental Sciences at UEA, regarding the study of microbial and bacterioplankton respiration in the ocean.
The successful candidate will be involved in the synthesis of fluorescently labelled tetrazolium salts used in the quantification of the respiration in plankton cells using palladium-catalysed cross-coupling reactions. Further modifications to improve solubility or fluorescent properties, to avoid quenching or interference and to ensure representative cellular uptake, will be incorporated depending on the results obtained with the first analogues.
Experience in synthetic chemistry is essential and background in fluorescent labelling is highly desirable. Creativity is highly valued. The candidate must be able to work independently while functioning as part of a team in the PIs’ laboratories in the Schools of Chemistry and Environmental Sciences.
The candidate must have a PhD in Chemistry and be able to fulfil all the essential elements of the person specification.
This full time post is available from 1 November 2017 for a fixed term period of 9 months.
Closing date: on 29 September 2017.
