Detail information about job Research Associate (Plasticity and Cancer). Terms and conditions vacancy

We are seeking to appoint a Research Associate to investigate in the cell of origin of cancer. The Research Associate will be based in the laboratory of Dr Daniel Munoz-Espin, who is a Group Leader in the Department of Oncology at the University of Cambridge. This is a new post funded by the Medical Research Council (MRC) and is available from 1 January 2018.

One of the main goals of the Dr Munoz-Espin's research programme is the understanding of the mechanisms and processes that contribute to the origin of cancer at the cellular level, which remains a formidable challenge in oncology. We are looking for a researcher to work at the interface between cellular plasticity, senescence, cancer stem cells and cancer, with a focus on (but not restricted to) lung tumours. Candidates must have a PhD (or equivalent) in the biological or biomedical sciences, and relevant experience working in cancer fundamental research, cellular biology, animal models and lineage tracing. Skills in cellular reprogramming and culture of stem and iPS cells is desirable but not essential.

Candidates must have at least one first-author research article accepted for publication in a major peer-reviewed journal. International experience and/or interconnections with the research industry would be desirable.

The successful applicant will perform experiments with cancer, lineage tracing and reprogrammable animal models, and also will have active access to human tissue samples in collaboration with the Papworth Hospital Research Tissue Bank and the Human Research Tissue Bank of the Cambridge Biomedical Research Centre. Our final aim is to isolate and characterise tumour initiating cells, to test the contribution of associated processes, and to identify the underlying mechanisms. Translation of this knowledge is crucial to develop more efficient methods for cancer diagnosis and to implement more efficient therapeutic interventions.

The laboratory of Dr Munoz-Espin is part of the Early Detection Programme of the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Centre, (http://www.earlydetectioncambridge.org.uk/), which is core funded by Cancer Research UK (http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/), the largest independent cancer research organisation in the world. Due to the internationally-renowned research institutions at the Cambridge Biomedical Research Campus (including the CRUK Cambridge Institute or the WT/MRC Cambridge Stem Cell Institute), the connections with Addenbrooke's and Papworth's hospitals, an increase in the number of biotechnology companies (such as AstraZeneca or Abcam), and the academic excellence of the University, Cambridge has become a worldwide recognised core for cancer research. Our location affords our members ready access to state-of-the-art research equipment and clinical facilities, cancer animal models, human tissue samples, and the opportunity to forge collaborations with world class laboratory scientists and clinicians.

Informal enquiries are welcomed, and should be directed to Dr Munoz-Espin at [email protected].

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 31 December 2020 in the first instance.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment and a security check.
