About The Role

Octopus is the UK’s national facility for optical microscopy. Based in the Research Complex at Harwell, an interdisciplinary centre located at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory near Oxford, Octopus is part of the STFC’s Central Laser Facility and offers a unique portfolio range of world-class microscopy techniques for the research community.

We have recently obtained funding to increase access to Octopus for users from industry and in order to deliver this increased access we are recruiting a technician to add to the scientific support team. You will be responsible for supporting the operation and user program of the Octopus facility, maintenance and upgrade of instrumentation and laboratory infrastructure, administrative and safety support in scientific operations. An important role will be administration of industrial access to the facility and will include dealing with representatives of companies accessing the facility and acting as the interface between industrial users and scientific support staff.  You will work with the experienced Octopus team in collaboration with staff in the Research Complex at Harwell, our user community as well as other groups in STFC.

Specific tasks will include:

  • Assisting facility users with sample preparation including cell culture and labelling of samples
  • Coordinating industrial access to the facility
  • Assisting with the facility access process (communicating with the Central Laser Facility User Office, Facility Access Panel Chair and secretary)
  • Assisting Octopus group members with ordering of consumables and equipment
  • Assisting in the collation and provision of data on industrial and academic facility access.

Successful applicants will be appointed at either Band B or Band C of STFC’s staffing hierarchy, depending on the strength of your skills, experience and qualifications.

About You

It is essential that you have experience working in a scientific laboratory environment.

You will have a university degree or equivalent in relevant experience as well as an interest in science and technology.

You must have experience in cell culture or biochemical preparation.
