Applications are invited for the post of Teaching Laboratory Supervisor and Manager in physical chemistry. You will be responsible for the overall operation of the physical chemistry elements of the undergraduate practical teaching course. This is one of three such positions within Oxford Chemistry, the others covering inorganic and organic chemistry.
In addition to overseeing the general running of the physical chemistry practical course and the day-to-day running of the laboratories, you will be responsible for training and instructing junior demonstrators and providing students with the academic context of practical experiments. The role will involve a considerable amount of ‘hands on’ work in maintaining and improving instrumentation and in demonstrating its use to undergraduates.
You will also work with a team of lab course developers under the direction of the Director of Studies to develop and implement the physical chemistry elements of the new integrated chemistry course currently being developed in Oxford and due to be launched in new custom-built lab facilities in October 2018.
You will hold a PhD in experimental physical chemistry or a closely related subject and have significant postdoctoral research experience, in particular in the running of experimental equipment.
An interest in chemistry teaching at University level, experience of working with analytical instrumentation, the ability to enthuse undergraduates in experimental chemistry, awareness of Health and Safety principles and practice, and excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required.
Experience of managing or supervising staff would be desirable.
This post will be based in the Department of Chemistry, South Parks Road, Oxford
This is a fixed-term post until 30 September 2018.
Applications are to be made online. You will be required to upload a supporting statement and CV as part of your online application.
The closing date for application is 12.00 midday on Thursday 21 September 2017.
