Detail information about job Senior Scientific Officer: Metabolomics. Terms and conditions vacancy

Dr Gillian Mackay

Cancer Research UK Beatson Institute is one of Europe's leading research institutes, and benefits from close interactions with the University of Glasgow through the Institute of Cancer Sciences. The Metabolomics facility uses mass spectrometry analysis to support cancer metabolism research projects, where the aim is to increase our understanding of alterations in metabolic pathways in cancer cells and to use this knowledge to aid in the development of novel therapies.

We are looking for a Senior Scientific Officer in the Metabolomics Group who will operate our Thermo Q-Exactive Orbitrap LC-MS/MS, Thermo Altis triple quadrupole LC-MS/MS and Agilent GC-MS systems and the associated data analysis software for targeted and untargeted approaches to metabolomics and lipidomics.

Supporting various cancer metabolism projects, the Senior Scientific Officer will liaise with researchers providing the samples, run the samples and be involved in regular maintenance of our mass spectrometry systems. The role includes developing new mass spectrometry methods and optimising various commercial data analysis software for our needs. As part of the Cancer Metabolism Research Unit, the role involves attending group meetings and interacting with research scientists and mass spectrometry users.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in a Biochemistry related discipline and strong laboratory skills.  It is essential to have experience in LC-MS and/or GC-MS in the metabolomics or a related field, working with large data sets. Knowledge of data analysis software packages for metabolomics is desirable. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work well in a team are essential.
