About the opportunityThe Australian Centre for Field Robotics (ACFR) is based in the School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering (AMME) at The University of Sydney, and is dedicated to the research, development, application and dissemination of autonomous and intelligent robots and systems for operation in outdoor environments. The ACFR is a large multidisciplinary team of researchers and engineers with backgrounds in computer science, aeronautical and mechatronic engineering, physics and mathematics. It is the largest field robotics and automation research group in Australia and is also one of the largest of its kind in the world. It has been instrumental in developing breakthrough technologies and in conducting world-leading research and development of field robotics principles and systems.
We are currently seeking a self-motivated and well qualified researcher to contribute to the theoretical and applied tasks of the Intelligent Transport System research group. This will provide an exceptional opportunity to work closely with academia at the intersection of mathematical modelling and the development and deployment of autonomous road vehicles technology. You will be expected to build research areas, engage in academic publication of research, and may also have the opportunity to teach at postgraduate and undergraduate level.

PhD (or about to be awarded) in applied mathematics, robotics, mechatronics engineering, computer science or related discipline, be a team player with good communications skills and satisfy the following key requirements:
- Research outputs and expert knowledge of state-of-the-art computer vision algorithms
- Expert knowledge in one or more of the following fields: perception, navigation, multi-modal sensor fusion
- Experience in software development with one or more of: Python, C++, Matlab
- Analytical and numerical mathematical skills in linear algebra and calculus
- Expert knowledge of modern machine learning and/or data fusion techniques

The position is full-time fixed term for one year, with potential for extension subject to funding and is subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees. Membership of a University approved superannuation scheme is a condition of employment for new appointees.
