Detail information about job Fully-funded PhD studentship in the Centre for Quantum Photonics. Terms and conditions vacancy

The project:

The Centre for Quantum Photonics (CQP) at the University of Bristol is pleased to invite applications a fully funded PhD position in integrated photonic quantum technologies to research the topic of "Integrated Quantum Key Distribution".

CQP is a world leading quantum information research centre pursuing fundamental quantum information science and developing unique and novel quantum technologies pioneering the use of cutting-edge integrated quantum photonics. CQP is a key partner in the Quantum Communications Hub, part of a £270M investment by the UK government into quantum technologies. In particular, it is focussed on bringing quantum communications technologies out of the lab and into the real world.

You will be a key part of the Quantum Communications team at Bristol developing quantum photonic communications and cryptography technologies working with university researchers and industrial partners. The aim of the project is to design and test integrated optical devices for quantum key distribution (QKD). This exciting role will involve implementation of new protocols, improving QKD performance, investigating new material platforms and prototyping full stand-alone systems based on integrated devices that can operate in real world network scenarios.

The candidate:

The ideal candidate will have a Master’s level degree in any of the physics, mathematics, electronic engineering or photonics engineering disciplines. The applicant must have an affinity with the research topic and the quality of applicant's academic record will be more important in relevant subject areas. Candidates are strongly encouraged to look at relevant publications.

The research environment:

Our goal in the Centre for Quantum Photonics (CQP) is to explore fundamental aspects of quantum mechanics and to develop future photonic quantum technologies by generating, manipulating and measuring single photons. Photonics engineering solutions are core to our method. In particular, the focus of the Quantum Communications project is on building practical quantum-secure encryptions systems that can be deployed in real-world scenarios.

The successful candidate will work with their supervisor Prof. Mark Thompson in the supportive environment offered by his research team and the CQP, including collaborating with fellow PhD students, postdoctoral researchers and a network of international collaborators working on aligned experiment and theory projects.

How to apply:

Please make an online application for this project at http://www.bris.ac.uk/pg-howtoapply. Please select Quantum Photonics on the Programme Choice page and enter details of the studentship when prompted in the Funding and Research Details sections of the form. Please specify in your cover letter that you wish to be considered for the 'Integrated Quantum Key Distribution studentship'.

Candidate requirements:  Due to funding restrictions, this studentship is only available to UK students and will cover UK fees and a full stipend for 3.5 years. For more information on studying at the University of Bristol please visit the post graduate webpages http://www.bristol.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/.

Funding: The studentships are fully funded for 3.5 years.

Contacts: [email protected].

The University of Bristol is committed to equality and we value the diversity of our staff and students.
