Detail information about job PhD Studentship in Plasticity Theory. Terms and conditions vacancy

Contract: Temporary

Closing date: October 2017 or as soon as the position is filled

A full PhD studentship on the development of novel theory for plasticity is offered. The project is led by Professor Pedro Rivera at the Department of Engineering, Lancaster University, in collaboration with a variety of academic of industrial partners. The main aim of the project is to extend a novel thermostatistical theory of plasticity to incorporate the effects of irradiation and hydrogen embrittlement. The work will be performed in collaboration with Oxford, Imperial College, Cambridge, Kings College London and Sheffield universities. You will collaborate with colleagues at Lancaster University and our partners, and will be actively involved in meetings, workshops and conferences.

Project synopsis: A novel theory for plastic deformation has been developed by Prof Rivera and his group. The theory has been able to predict, within a unified framework, the combined effects of microstructure, composition, temperature and strain rate. It has been applied to steels, nickel, titanium and magnesium alloys, describing over 100 alloy systems. The approach borrows concepts of statistical mechanics, combining them with dislocation theory to describe plasticity. The work is now to be extended to incorporate the effects of irradiation by describing dislocation/(H,He) interactions, as well as dislocation/vacancy complexes interactions.

Qualifications and experience:

  • The minimum academic requirement for admission is an upper second class UK honours degree at the level of MSci, MEng, MPhys, MChem etc, or a lower second with a good Master's, (or overseas equivalents) in a relevant subject.
  • A strong background in plasticity and dislocation theory is required.
  • Knowledge of statistical thermodynamics and physical metallurgy is essential.
  • Computer programming skills are essential for the post.
  • You must have excellent interpersonal skills, work effectively in a team and have experience of the preparation of presentations, reports or journal papers to the highest levels of quality.

This post is offered on a 36 months fixed-term appointment.

Full sponsorship is available for EU-citizens only.

We welcome applications from people in all diversity groups.

Application procedure:

Send CV and cover letter to Professor Pedro Rivera ([email protected]), Chair in Advanced Manufacturing, Department of Engineering, Lancaster University. A short list of candidates will be produced in August 2017 and interviews will follow.
