Detail information about job PhD Studentship: Development of Netshape Hot Isostatic Pressing for Nickel Superalloys. Terms and conditions vacancy

Applications are invited from graduates with a first class, or upper second-class degree in an appropriate discipline such as, materials science and engineering, physics or mechanical engineering for a PhD project on the development of netshape powder hot isostatic pressing for Ni Superalloys for high temperature applications.

Powder Hot isostatic pressing (P-HIP) is a manufacturing process that involves simultaneous application of high temperature and pressure to consolidate powders into netshape products. A programme of detailed research is required to understand the precipitation mechanisms of oxides and carbides at the prior particle boundaries (PPBs) in advanced powder metallurgy nickel alloys during HIPing and heat treatment. A theory of their precipitation as a function of composition (powder alloy type) and thermomechanical processing will be developed, computationally modelled and validated by experiment. The effect of the different HIPed microstructures (PPB particle character, grain size and morphology, etc.) on the creep, fatigue and fracture properties will be characterised and developed into a theory for design of more affordable new alloys for casing applications with optimal structure and properties. The project will involve the use of advanced metallurgical characterisation techniques, including electron microscopy, X-ray microtomography, and mechanical testing. This PhD project is sponsored by TWI Ltd (The Welding Institute) through an doctoral training scheme studentship. Due to the funding restrictions, only UK/EU citizens are eligible to apply.

The student will be based between TWI (Great Abington, Cambridge) and in the advanced materials and processing laboratory, University of Birmingham.

Please contact Professor Attallah ([email protected]) if you are interested in applying for this project.
