Detail information about job Bernoulli Postdoctoral Research Assistant. Terms and conditions vacancy

Parks Road, Oxford

Applications are invited for a Bernoulli Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Exoplanet Science. The post is available for a fixed-term duration of 2 years.

This project engages key frontier areas concerning the atmospheres and climates of extrasolar planets. The emphasis is on Earth to Super-Earth mass/size classes of planets. The post is intended to be held as part of the Bernoulli Fellowship program, fostering collaboration on exoplanet research between the University of Oxford and Bern University (see: www.csh.unibe.ch/research/projects/csh_fellowship/index_eng.html). The project offers almost unlimited scope for the postholder to define his or her own research agenda within the general area of simulation of exoplanet climate phenomena.

The successful candidate will join Oxford’s growing exoplanet research program. He or she will work closely with the P.I. and with University of Bern partners in developing and carrying out a research program in the general area of exoplanet atmospheres and climates. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: exoplanet atmospheres; their dynamics, thermodynamics and chemistry; their formation and their evolution through interaction with the planetary surface and interior and escape to space; their detection and characterisation. Uninhabitable climates, such as those of lava planets are as much (or more) within the scope of interest as more Earthlike habitable planets with surface liquid water. The postholder will have the opportunity to teach.

Applicants should possess or be very close to obtaining a doctorate in physics or a related field and ideally a strong background in planetary atmospheres and numerical simulation of fluids. Candidates are expected to demonstrate a capability for independent innovative research, as evidenced by their publication record. Candidates with primary expertise in planetary geology pertinent to volatile cycling are also welcome to apply.

A demonstrated ability to initiate and conduct independent research is essential, as is a high degree of experience with programming techniques for high performance computing.

Please direct enquiries about the role to Professor Raymond T Pierrehumbert ([email protected]).

You will be required to upload a brief statement of research interests, CV and details of two referees as part of your online application.

Only applications received before 12.00 midday on 1 December 2017 can be considered.
