The project:

The project will investigate a robust vision system for obstacle detection to assist a driverless vehicle operating in an outdoor farming environment, and will be a collaboration between Warwick University and the sponsor Dynium Robot. The projects aim is to produce a highly reliable obstacle detection system utilising a fusion of sensors (video camera and lidar), which will ultimately form a mobile robots safety system, and conform to the relevant standards. Part of the project is to simulate the vision system (in collaboration with Dynium Robot) by generating real-world test cases to verify the accuracy of the system. The sensor fusion will be undertaken in collaboration with the student and the company.

The student will be based at Dynium Robot site in Oxford with the academic project supervisor based at Warwick University. An additional industrial supervisor will also be provided at Dynium Robot. The student will have access to a farm for system trials and data collection throughout the project duration except during harvest time.

Dynium Robot is a high-tech start-up developing autonomous off-road vehicle systems. The successful applicant will gain experience working in a commercial autonomous robotics environment, alongside the company engineers, and gain exposure to various aspects of the business and product development.

Eligibility: UK or EU candidates with at least an upper second class honours in Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Systems Engineering or related degree.

Funding: The studentship covers the full tuition fees at the Home/EU rate and standard stipend currently £19,000.
