In December 2016, it was announced that UCL had been selected as the 'hub' of the new £250m UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI), to be led by Professor Bart De Strooper. The UK DRI is a joint £250m investment into dementia research led by the Medical Research Council (MRC) alongside founding charity partners Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer’s Research UK.
Applications are invited for Programme Leaders (Fellows) in the UCL DRI Hub from dedicated individuals with a flair for innovation who will contribute across the UK DRI as well as within the DRI at UCL. The post holders will lead an internationally competitive research programme within the UK DRI relevant to the area of neurodegeneration, with the ultimate aim of improving human health, and will draw on the knowledge and expertise of other colleagues both within and outside the UK DRI through collaborative inputs and team working. The UK DRI is looking to transform the field of dementias research and welcomes scientists from all disciplines. In addition, £1.5 million UK DRI Programme Funding will be provided to each Fellow over 5 years.
Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent in a relevant subject, substantial postdoctoral experience, a proven track record of internationally competitive scientific research relevant to the UK DRI core programme, a strong record of publications in high impact journals, with emphasis on quality, and a record of being awarded competitive grants. Excellent oral and written communication skills, and good inter-personal skills with an ability to work co-operatively in a multidisciplinary setting are essential. For appointment at Grade 9, experience of supervision of staff and/or students, of leading successful projects independently (or having the potential to do so), of managing resources, and in building, strengthening and sustaining successful collaborations both within the home institute and externally, influencing outcomes and/or direction, are also required.
The posts are available from April 2018 and are funded from UK DRI @ UCL initially for 5 years, with appointment based on the MRC tenure-track route. Starting salary on UCL Grade 8 in the range £42,304 - £54,240 per annum, or on UCL Grade 9 in the range £54,240 - £65,989 per annum, including London Allowance, superannuable. A competitive salary will be available to exceptional candidates.
