Detail information about job Academic Assessor – Chevening Programme Reading Committees. Terms and conditions vacancy

We are seeking Academic Assessors to participate in the 2018-2019 Chevening reading committees. Do you have experience in assessing applications for entry to a UK post-graduate programme? Do you want to be involved in the selection of the world’s future leaders? If so, you could play a crucial part in the selection of future Chevening scholars and fellows.

The Chevening programme is the UK government’s global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations. Offered in over 160 countries and territories (excluding the EU and USA), the programme grants awards to outstanding scholars and fellows with demonstrable leadership potential and a commitment to creating positive change in their home country.

Reading committees play a vital part in the selection of Chevening Scholars and Fellows. They are an independent panel of experts comprising of two members: an Academic Assessor and a Regional Assessor.

Academic Assessors have experience in assessing applicants for entry onto UK postgraduate courses in a range of subject areas. You will be asked to review the applicant’s academic background and assess the relevance and suitability of their chosen fields of study to their future career and development of their sector and country. Assessors are typically those currently working at a UK higher education institution, recruitment agency or scholarship scheme.

Each committee will assess applications from one country or a number of countries from a specific region. Each assessor will be asked to make an assessment on the quality of each applicant against the Chevening global selection criteria. You will be asked to submit your assessments using an online system between 21 November 2017 and 2 January 2018.

All committee members will receive an honorarium for their time and valued contributions. The total amount received will be dependent on the number of applications assessed, based on £1.50 per application. It is anticipated that each assessor will assess between 400-600 applications. Academic Assessors will be asked to collaborate with the Regional Assessor on writing a short report summarising the applications they have reviewed for each country assessed. Academic and Regional Assessors will each be paid £25 for successful completion of each country report.

Extensive training will be provided for all committee members. There will be a mandatory training session on Monday 20 November 2017 for all new members where they will be briefed on the marking criteria and guidance on how to complete the assessments. Those required to attend the training session will be able to claim a reimbursement for transport costs of up to £150. Hotel, food and any other costs are not eligible for reimbursement. If you have participated in the Chevening reading committee previously it is not mandatory for you to attend the training session.

For more information on this vacancy, including the eligibility and details on how to apply, please see the attached job profile and the Association of Commonwealth Universities vacancies page.

There will be a rolling deadline until all assessors have been recruited. Applications will be reviewed and telephone interviews will be conducted throughout the application window. If your application is shortlisted you will be contacted to arrange a suitable date and time for your interview. Applications will close on 2 October 2017 at 17:00 (GMT).
