Detail information about job Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Exoplanet Atmospheres. Terms and conditions vacancy

Parks Road, Oxford

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Exoplanet Climate Theory and Simulation. The post is available for a fixed-term duration of 4 years.

The holder of the post will join the team of the European Research Council Advanced Grant Project EXOCONDENSE, under the direction of Raymond T Pierrehumbert, Halley Professor of Physics. The goal of the project is to develop a comprehensive understanding of the effect of condensible substances on the climate dynamics of exoplanet atmospheres. In effect, the project seeks to generalise the range of processes familiar from moist climate dynamics on Earth involving condensation of water vapour to the much broader range of condensible substances, equations of state, and dynamical configurations that may be encountered in exoplanet atmospheres.

The successful candidate will carry out research in either the general area of three dimensional simulation of convection with phase change, parameterisation closure models of generalised condensible convection or condensation effects in global circulation models, according to background and interest. Cloud formation processes are of interest in connection with any of these topics. The work will consist of developing and interpreting simulations of relevant processes, plus development of the theoretical framework needed to understand the simulations. Identifying observational signatures amenable to testing by current or future observational programs is a central goal of the program. The postholder will have the opportunity to teach.

Applicants should possess a PhD/DPhil with post-qualification research experience or equivalent and ideally a strong background in planetary atmospheres and numerical simulation of fluids.

Previous experience with cloud processes, radiative transfer and either general circulation or convection modelling will be an advantage. A demonstrated ability to initiate and conduct independent research is essential, as is a high degree of experience with programming techniques for high performance computing.

Please direct enquiries about the role to Professor Raymond T Pierrehumbert [email protected] .

You will be required to upload a brief statement of research interests, CV and details of two referees as part of your online application.

Only applications received before 12.00 midday on 30 October 2017 can be considered.
