The School of Chemistry is one of the top 10 Chemistry Departments in the UK (Guardian UK University Rankings, 2017) and is ranked within the top 100 in the world (QS University World Rankings, 2017) with an internationally renowned track record in pioneering research. Thanks to a generous bequest of Sir Gordon Hobday, the School is seeking to appoint the first in a series of endowed Hobday Fellowships.

These Fellowships present the opportunity for early career researchers to embark on a fully independent academic career. Our overwhelming driver is to recruit the highest quality candidates in any area of activity that will (i) contribute to the School’s ambitious research vision; (ii) align strategically with School and University research priorities; and (iii) have a strong interdisciplinary and collaborative research theme. Possible areas of expertise could include, but are not restricted to: innovative measurement and analytical science; soft matter, colloids, and new materials; energy; healthcare technologies; and sustainable processes. The successful candidates will be supported by world-class infrastructure and research facilities.

The Fellowships are linked to a permanent academic post, subject to performance against a quality threshold which includes publication outputs and ability to generate further independent funding, and is subject to the continued right to work in the UK. The School has an outstanding track record in nurturing early career researchers to full academic posts and is pro-active in promoting an environment of equality, diversity and inclusion, as reflected in our status as an Athena Swan Silver Award holder (2017).

Candidates must have been awarded their PhD prior to the closing date, and should have no more than 8 years post-doctoral experience following the award of their PhD. Career breaks such as maternity leave, EU national service, and Voluntary Service Overseas are not counted, but a period of ‘teaching only’ experience and/or time spent in industry since the award of a PhD should amount to no more than 96 months.

Candidates must demonstrate an outstanding track record of research including high-quality publications, research funding and/or prizes and awards. They must demonstrate the drive to lead an ambitious and original research programme and an ability to inspire others within the research team.Candidates must submit a research proposal as part of their application materials and should make informal contact with the School at an early stage to discuss the development of an expression of interest.

The Fellowship package includes three years’ salary in the range £29,301 - £46,924 per annum, depending on experience, up to £25K additional research costs, up to £5K taxable childcare costs, and up to £1500 removal expenses.
