* Please note that this is a PhD level role but candidates who have submitted their thesis and are awaiting award of their PhDs will be considered. Should the successful candidate be awaiting the award of their PhD, the appointment will be made at Grade 5, spinal point 30 with the title of Research Assistant until confirmation of the award of the PhD has been received. Upon confirmation of the award of the PhD, the job title will become Research Associate and the salary will increase to Grade 6, spine point 31.

We are seeking an ambitious and enthusiastic Postdoctoral Research Associate to join our exciting Placental Imaging Project based in the School of Biomedical Engineering and Imaging Sciences at King’s College London, with collaborators at University College London, Nottingham University and Columbia University in New York.
The placenta is a transient organ that provides vital support functions for the developing fetus throughout gestation. It is perhaps the least well studied organ in the human body. The Placental Imaging Project is a $3 million project which aims to develop four MR methodologies to assess placental structure, microstructure and function across gestation, to integrate these into one comprehensive MR examination acceptable to pregnant women, and to combine this with continuous fetal ECG recordings to provide a step change in antenatal assessment of normal and abnormal placental development when compared to current methods. A key challenge is that the placenta moves and flexes its shape as the mother breaths so that images acquired at different times during an examination have to be brought into a common coordinate system before a full multimodal analysis can be successful. The role is therefore to develop and apply computational image methodologies that can ultimately lead to a much enhanced capability for antenatal assessments. The project is already generating a lot of new image data so there is plenty of material to use to develop and test new methods.
