Detail information about job Research Assistant / Associate in Disciplined Approximate Arithmetic. Terms and conditions vacancy

Salary range:

£36,800 - £44,220 per annum (Research Associate)

£32,380 - £34,040 per annum (Research Assistant)

Fixed-term appointment for one year

We are aiming to develop exciting approximate arithmetic techniques to trade off the cost of a numerical computation (time taken, area and energy in hardware) against the probability of correctness, focusing on applications containing a Boolean function where the “wrong” answer creates an overhead (e.g. wasted computation). This is part of a broader research vector, in which we are interested in the general problem of synthesising an approximation P’ to a known program P minimizing a metric defined over the difference between these two programs subject to constraints on the area, performance and energy of P’.

We are keen to speak to candidates with a strong background in software development. A track record in at least one of the following contributing areas of expertise would also be of value:

  • Probabilistic program analysis or probabilistic programming
  • Approximate computing
  • Computer arithmetic
  • Probabilistic modelling

During the one year of appointment, the applicant will have the opportunity – should they so wish - to work with the academic investigators to put together a longer-term grant proposal in this field and to engage with industrial partners.

Appointments can be made either at Research Assistant or Research Associate level. For the latter, applicants must already hold a PhD (or equivalent). In the former case, applicants will be eligible to register for a PhD programme should they so wish.

As well as being able to demonstrate skills and experience in one or more of the above areas, you should have the ability to interact with a wide range of people across a number of partner institutions and with international collaborators, the ability to develop and apply new concepts, and excellent verbal communication skills.  You should also be able to organise your own work with minimal supervision, work to deadlines and demonstrate willingness to work as part of a team.

This post also offers opportunities to work with colleagues from Imagination Technologies, with the potential for industrial impact.

For informal enquiries about the post please contact Professor G. Constantinides at [email protected].

Our preferred method of application is online via our website.
