Detail information about job Research Associate* in Approximate Computing with Application to Machine Learning. Terms and conditions vacancy

Fixed-term appointment for one year

Role summary

We are recruiting to our world-leading FPGA-based computing research group. We are aiming to develop exciting approximate computing techniques spanning software and hardware, suitable for next-generation applications in machine learning. Consider a program P drawn from a domain of interest. The broad goal of our project is to approximate this program P by another program P’ and to simultaneously devise a customised architecture A such that P’ has low energy consumption and high performance when implemented on architecture A, while being able to rigorously reason about the difference in behaviour between P and P’ operating on metrics defined under various mathematical assumptions regarding the data read by program P. The focus of this post will be on the mathematical reasoning about, synthesis and optimization of the program P’.

We intend to apply sophisticated algebraic techniques to approximate the program; we are therefore keen to speak to candidates with a strong track record in at least one of the following contributing areas of expertise:

  • Program analysis
  • Probabilistic programming
  • Machine learning
  • Algebraic geometry
  • Approximate computing

The post-holder will have the flexibility and freedom to address a part of the larger vision that particularly interests them and matches their expertise, and equally will have the opportunity to broaden their area of expertise. During the one year of appointment, the applicant will have the opportunity to work with the investigators to put together a longer-term grant proposal in this field.

To be appointed at Research Associate level, applicants must already hold a PhD (or equivalent).  We are also keen to talk to candidates who will soon receive their PhD in one of these areas.

As well as being able to demonstrate skills and experience in one or more of the above areas, you should have the ability to interact with a wide range of people across a number of partner institutions and with international collaborators, the ability to develop and apply new concepts, and excellent verbal communication skills.  You should also be able to organise your own work with minimal supervision, work to deadlines and demonstrate willingness to work as part of a team.

For informal enquiries about the post please contact Professor G. Constantinides and Dr C. Bouganis at [email protected] / [email protected].

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistants within the salary range £32,380 - £34,040 per annum
