“Exploring the role of remote coaching technologies on development and skill acquisition of elite athletes with disabilities”

Background:Queensland University of Technology (QUT), in collaboration with the Australian Paralympic Committee (APC) are offering a fully funded 18-month Master of Philosophy (MPhil). As well as the opportunity to study for an MPhil, the scholarship and research programme will also provide the selected student with opportunities for applied work experience supporting Australian Para-sport athletes under the guidance of Dr Ross Pinder (Skill Acquisition Specialist, APC), Dr Ian Renshaw and Professor Remco Polman (QUT). Opportunities for articulation to a PhD will also be available subject to the student successfully acquiring an APA scholarship.

Project summary:For elite athletes with disabilities in Australia, relocation or centralized sport programs are often not possible options, and sport funding is severely limited; the APC and QUT are therefore interested in exploring how to maximize the use of remote coaching for preparation of athletes for the Paralympic Games in Tokyo 2020 and beyond. Existing and emerging technologies are enabling more coaching and performance support to occur remotely or via online mediums (e.g., video review, live coaching via video). While this methodology has some obvious limitations, it is outweighed by the potential benefits such as access to high performance coaching for a wider group of athletes. Additionally, remote coaching may lead to the emergence of more creative coaching and advance all coaching practice. However, currently there is limited knowledge of the impact of technology on the coaching process, or how to maximize the use of remote coaching to develop athletes’ skills. In this MPhil project we aim to address some of the following objectives:

  • Assess the benefits and limitations of remote coaching contexts
  • Use a mixed method approach (qualitative dominant) to explore the impact of technology on coach and athlete behaviour
  • Development of guidelines to maximise the role of remote training tools

Minimum requirements:Completion of a bachelor degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline, with a minimum grade point average of 5 (on a 7 point scale) AND relevant professional and/or research experience; OR completion of a bachelor honours degree in a relevant discipline. QUT requires that all students demonstrate a specified level of English proficiency (refer to MOPP E/4.1.8).
