Detail information about job Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Optical Sensing and Analysis of Nanoparticles. Terms and conditions vacancy

Parks Road, Oxford

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to join the Photonic Nanomaterials Group, led by Professor Jason Smith. You will become a key member of a team working on the sensing and analysis of nanoparticles in fluids using optical micro-resonators. The post is fixed-term to 31 March 2019.

You will use an existing laboratory prototype apparatus to perform measurements on nanoparticles and carry out detailed analysis of results to determine their properties. You will use and develop the apparatus to identify and extend performance parameters such as measurement resolution and dynamic range, and carry out demonstrations experiments focusing on technologically important classes of nanoparticles. You will develop analytic and/or numerical models as appropriate to aid with data analysis. The work will be carried out in the Materials Department in Oxford, and in collaboration with a new spinout company, Oxford HighQ, who lead the overall project with a grant from InnovateUK. The project is also in consultation with Malvern Instruments Ltd, a globally leading commercial supplier of instrumentation for nanoparticle analysis.

You will have (or be close to completing) a PhD/DPhil in physics, materials science or engineering, together with research experience in photonics. Experience in microfluidics or nanofluidics would be an advantage. You will have the ability to develop apparatus in a laboratory context.

The closing date for applications is 12.00 midday on 8 September 2017.

The Department of Materials is actively promoting the provision of a family friendly working environment and together with the University of Oxford recognises the demands of work/life balance. Therefore for this project we encourage applications from candidates who wish either to hold these positions on a full-time, or part-time basis or need flexibility in their working hours and will discuss these opportunities with shortlisted applicants at interview.
